If you are planning a big move or have found that dream job miles away, how do you go about securing that job across state lines? There are a lot of variables that could result in new employment outside your home state, especially if that state is far away.
Here are some strategies to make it work:
Sometimes the best way to start your job hunt is to see where that dream job of yours is, then, work your way to the destination. If you are a tech developer in Georgia and you found the holy grail of jobs out in Silicon Valley, start by simply applying and going through the interview process. Start creating contingency plans to make a move work, but start with the dream job instead of the dream location.
Landing a job in a different state prior to your relocation can be daunting. The best way to overcome this is by having a plan and knowing your timeline. To an interviewer it might not reflect well to just “wing it” when it comes to making a major life change. Going into the interview with a solid idea of when you will be able to start and how you can make an impact prior to arriving at the office is going to make a huge difference.
It’s becoming more commonplace for employers to offer remote work or a hybrid type of schedule. During the interviewing process, ask if that is an option until you get settled in your new home. This will alleviate any stress on both sides if there are any unforeseen delays or problems by knowing what solutions you have ahead of time.
If your out-of-state move only brings you a few hours from your current home or any manageable travel distance, try to plan a visit for a day or two. A great time to plan such a trip is when entering the interview stage. You can go and still complete an in-person interview and it will also give you the opportunity to explore your potential new surroundings.
Ensure your potential new employer is fully bought into your journey. Ask questions about logistics and flexibility to gage their ability to work with you through a move. Or maybe you won’t need to move at all! Ask if there are fully remote opportunities across state lines and see if that is the best option for all parties. Bring solutions to the table and ensure you cover all of your bases.
However you find your next job, just make sure it is the best fit for you. You can also partner with some expert recruiters in your field that can connect you with job potentials in the area you desire. That can further reduce the stress of moving.
